Dowson has try ruled out against Azzuri

FORMER Sedbergh School rugby star Phil Dowson had a try ruled out as he made his second appearance for England against Italy in the Six Nations.

Number 8 Dowson, who plays for Northampton Saints, pounced on a loose ball in the 25th minute to ground for a try but referee Jerome Garces had called the play back and instead Owen Farrell registered a penalty.

He was on the field for 50 minutes against the Azzuri before being replaced by Scarlets Ben Morgan, and critics have described the Wigton man as ‘ultra-reliable’ and ‘dependable’.

England went on to win the game and Dowson will be hoping to keep his place in interim head coach Stuart Lancaster’s plans for the Twickenham tie against Wales on Saturday week.
